Dr. M.V. Shetty College of Physiotherapy was established in 1990 and was the first college to offer the Bachelor of Physiotherapy course in Karnataka affiliated to Mangalore University. Presently the college is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Bangalore & is recognized by the Indian Association of Physiotherapists & IAGP. The courses in Physiotherapy offered by this College are well sought after by aspiring students from various parts of India and South Asia.

Physiotherapy is an integral part of modern medicine and has a major role in prevention and medical rehabilitation of physically handicapped. It has a major role in diagnosis, preventive and prognosis of many disorders like paralysis orthopedic conditions, arthritis and joint diseases and cardio-respiratory disorders. The courses in physiotherapy belong to allied medical science which is developing very fast.

Dr. M.V.Shetty college of Physiotherapy offers Two Courses Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) and Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka.

Courses:

Physical therapy is a health care profession which provides services to individuals to develop, maintain and restore the maximum physical movement, fitness and functional ability throughout life. This includes providing services in circumstances where movement, fitness and function are threatened by aging, injury, disease or environmental factors. Bachelor in Physiotherapy – (B.P.T.):

The Aim of this undergraduate Course in Physiotherapy is to impart in-depth knowledge and skill to the students to become competent in the physical diagnosis techniques and to develop proper attitude required for the practice of physiotherapy and to carry out treatment.

Eligibility for Admission:

Qualifying Examination:
A Candidate seeking admission to first year Bachelor in Physiotherapy (BPT):

i) Should have passed two year Pre University examination with 45 % of marks conducted by Department of Pre-University Education, Karnataka State, with English as one of the subjects and Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually also.

OR

ii) Shall have passed any other examination conducted by Boards/Councils/Intermediate examination established by State Government/Central Government and recognized as equivalent to a two year Pre University Examination by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences/ Association of Indian Universities (AIU), with English as one of the subjects and Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually also.

Age requirement:

The candidate seeking admission to the BPT Course should have completed 17 years of age, as on 31st of December of the year of admission

Medical Fitness Certificate:

Every candidate before admission to the BPT course should submit a certificate of Medical Fitness from an authorized Government Medical Officer saying that the candidate is physicaly fit to undergo the Physiotherapy Course.

Duration of Programme:

The duration of the Bachelor of Physiotherapy Course (BPT) is Four and half Years including Six months of Internship.

Medium of Instruction:
The Medium of Instruction is English

Master in Physiotherapy – M.P.T:

Aims and Goals:
1. To prepare a postgraduate student towards professional autonomy with self regulating discipline.
2. To form base of professional practice by referral as well as first contact mode using evidence based practices.
3. To impart research basis in order to validate techniques and technology in practice of physiotherapy.
4. To acquaint a student with concept of quality care at the institutional as well as at the community levels.
5. To inculcate appropriate professional relationships in multi-disciplinary set up, patient management and co-partnership basis.
6. To prepare students to address problems related to health education and community physiotherapy.
7. To practice the concept of protection of rights of the community during referral as well as first contact practice.
7. To incorporate concept of management in physiotherapy.
8. To provide experience in clinical training and undergraduate teaching partly
9. To provide honest, competent and accountable physiotherapy services to the community.

Eligibility for Admission:

Candidates who have passed B.Sc. (PT) or BPT degree from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) or any other university in India or abroad recognized as equivalent by RGUHS with not less than 50% of marks in aggregate are eligible.

No candidates shall be admitted for the postgraduate degree course unless the candidate has obtained and produced the eligibility certificate issued by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka. The candidate has to make the application to the University with the following documents along with the prescribed fee. The College may be contacted for obtaining the eligibility certificate.
1.B.P.T. or B.Sc. (PT) provisional/degree certificate issued by the respective university
2 Marks cards of all the university examinations passed.
3. Proof of SC/ST or category-1 as the case may be.

Candidates should obtain the eligibility certificate before the last date for admission as notified by the University.

A candidate who has been admitted to postgraduate course should register his/her name in the University within a month of admission after paying the registration fee.

Duration of Programme:

The duration of master of physiotherapy course shall be extended over a period of two continuous years on a full time basis. Any break in the career, power of extension of the course and the fixation of the term shall be vested with the University.

Medium of Instruction:

English is the medium of instruction for the subjects of study and for the examination of the M.P.T. course.

Ph.D. Programme:

1. Preamble:

Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences is also committed to promote research activities, both in basic and applied aspects in various faculties of Health Sciences such as Medical,(pre Clinical, Para Clinical and Clinical subjects)Dental, Pharmacy, Indian System of Medicine including Homoeopathy, Nursing( under National consortium for PhD in Nursing)And other allied Health Sciences in the institutions/colleges affiliated to this University. Inter disciplinary studies for PhD Degree is also promoted

2. Eligibility:

Candidates who have obtained Master’s Degree in the concerned subject under various faculties of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences or a PG degree considered as equivalent by this University are eligible for enrolment for PhD Course in this University.

Candidates with the following qualification are eligible for enrolment for PhD course of this University under the following faculties.

Candidates with a PG degree in Physiotherapy. i.e. MPT degree awarded by this University or a Master’s degree considered as equivalent by RGUHS are eligible for enrolment for PhD course in Physiotherapy under Medical faculty.

(Vide resolution passed by the PhD Registration committee in Medical faculty in its meeting held on 29.06.2004.)
3. Research Guide

In Physiotherapy if, a suitable Guide with PhD/MPT qualification fulfilling all other criteria to become a PhD Guide in the subject of Physiotherapy is not available a, senior Professor with M D/MS qualification of the relevant clinical subjects of Medical faculty in Clinical subjects related to Physiotherapy such as Orthopedics, Neurology, Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine etc may be considered as Guides till recognized Guides in Physiotherapy are available (Vide resolution passed by the PhD Registration committee in Medical faculty in its meeting held on 29.06.2004),provided he/she has fulfilled all the other criteria’s to become the PhD Guide. Senior faculty member with D M (Neurology) and M.ch (Cardio Vascular Surgery) can be the Guides for PhD in Physiotherapy (Vide resolution if the Academic Council in its meeting held on 24/11/2004).

Change of Guide

Change of Guide may be allowed within a period of less than two years of receiving guidance with the permission of the Guide and approval from the PhD Registration Committee of the University. The condition under which change of guide is allowed is:

a. The Guide has gone abroad or left the University / Institution.
b. When there is a death, illness of the Guide.

In such cases of extraordinary circumstances warranting change of Guide, the Guide/ student should place the facts before the Ph.D Registration Committee for its opinion. The decision of the Syndicate on the recommendations of the PhD Registration Committee shall be final.

4. Duration of Course:

The minimum duration of PhD courses or the said full time PhD students shall be three years from the date of provisional registration However the minimum duration shall be two years for those candidate who posses M .Phil degree. The minimum duration for such part time PhD students shall be five years from the date of provisional registration. However, one-year exemption will be given for candidates with M .Phil qualification.

5. Enrollment of Ph.D. Courses:

Application for enrolment of PhD courses shall be invited bi-annually (twice in a year) on dates to be notified by the university i.e. around the months of April- May& October-November every year. A candidate may apply for admission to PhD to the Registrar, RGUHS in the prescribed application format obtainable from the University following newspaper/website notification on payment of the prescribed fee for application form. Scrutiny and selection of candidates will take place by the end of month of June & December every year. Selected candidates will be granted provisional registration for the PhD course 1st session commencing from 1st August of same year & 2nd session commencing from 1st January of next year.

6. Procedures for Selection:

All applications received by the University on or before the stipulated time and date shall be placed before the PhD Registration Committee of the respective faculty. The Committee shall then examine the applications and after satisfying itself about the eligibility requirements, conduct an interview for the candidates. Every candidate shall make a presentation of his/her PhD protocol along with/without his/her Guide before the PhD Registration Committee. The committee shall then recommend the names of the selected. Candidates to the Vice-Chancellor for provisional registration within three months from the last date notified for the receipt of applications. Provisional registration shall be effective from the date mentioned as the last date for payment of prescribed fees in the concerned specialty for the selected candidates. Fee once paid shall not be refunded.

The candidates registered for PhD course shall work in the University, PG Departments or P.G. Departments or in any recognized laboratory, hospital, of an affiliated college recognized or such purpose by the University in its jurisdiction.

No candidate shall, without the previous permission of the PhD registration committee join any other course of study or appear for any other examination conducted by the University or –by any other University during the period of registration (Vide notification. ACA/AFF-GEN 2005-06 Dated 24.09.2005)

Permission of the candidate for making use of his research work in the Library such as Digitalization is also obtained at the time of provisional registration.

The selected candidates as well as candidates not selected will be intimated by post separately by the University. In all matters relating to selection, the selection committee can regulate its own procedures and the decision of the University shall be final. The University will not provide any stipend or financial assistance to the selected candidates

7. Pre Ph.D. Examination:
a) The scheme for Pre PhD examination to be conducted by the university shall be as follows

(i) Two written papers each of three hours duration and each carrying maximum of 100 marks.

PAPER l : Research Methodology related to the area of research.
PAPER ll : Specialization Background to the topics of study ( topics related to the specialized subjects) under which the topic/under which area of research is undertaken.

(ii) A Viva-Voce examination carrying a maximum of 100 marks for candidates who have passed the theory examination.

b) The syllabi for both papers for each candidate shall be prescribed by the Guide and should be approved by the subject experts of the PhD Registration Committee. The Syllabi prescribed by the Guide and approved by Subject experts for the two theory papers of Pre PhD examination, shall be notified and will be communicated to the Registrar(E ) of the University as well as to the candidate and to the concerned guide, at least one months earlier to the examination after they are approved bye the concerned committee.

However, Candidates with M.Phil qualification after a P.G. degree are exempted from appearing for Pre PhD examination. However ,candidates with M.Phil qualification shall defend their Research proposal before an internal and external examiner within 3 months of provisional registration for PhD course. On confirmation only the minimum period of their course shall be declared as two years.

8. Submission of Final Synopsis:

All the PhD candidates should submit a final synopsis containing the summary of the research work done to the PhD registration committee before submission of. All PhD candidates before submitting their final synopsis shall present his/her research work before the PhD Registration committee and subject experts on a suitable date fixed by the University and should get approval for writing the final synopsis and thesis.

PUBLICATION OF Research Paper.- All PhD candidates before submitting PhD thesis to the university should have published a minimum of two research papers related to their research topic during course as PhD student before submitting the final Thesis.

Submission of PhD Thesis-

Each candidate for the award of PhD degrees hall submit five copies of his/her thesis not earlier than the prescribed minimum period and not later than the prescribed maximum period.

9. Results:

The candidate shall be declared for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, only on the unanimous recommendation of the members of the board of examiners after the viva-voce examination.

of the board of examiners for the viva-voce examination shall report specifically on whether the candidate’s performance in the examination is satisfactory and therefore be considered for the award of PhD Degree or not. In case the examiners are not satisfied with the performance of the candidate in the viva voce examination, the candidates shall be permitted to undergo the viva voce examination for a second time after a period of three months. No candidate shall be permitted to take the viva-voce examination more than two occasions.

After the candidate successfully completes the Viva-Voce Examination, the Chairman shall consolidate the recommendation for the award of the PhD degree based on the following:

a. The report of the examiners who adjudicated the thesis.
b. Evaluation of the candidate’s performance in the viva-voce examination.

The chairman shall then forward the consolidated and the individual reports to the Registrar (Evaluation) of the university.

10 Award of Ph.D. Degree:

Based on the reports of the Board of Examiners, the University shall award the PhD Degree after the recommendations are approved by the Vice-Chancellor/Syndicate. The PhD degree will be awarded in the respective subject of specialization of the respective faculty and shall be designated as a Doctor of Philosophy. A degree under the seal of the University and signed by the Vice-Chancellor will be given to each successful candidate at the next convocation held for conferring degree.

Facilites for Students:

Students studying in different courses offered in the colleges managed by Dr. M.V. Shetty Memorial Trust have been provided with good facilities like Hostels for comfortable living, Transportation to commute from the hostels and clinics to the colleges, Sports and Games for recreation. Hostels

Hostels Separate hostels are provided for boys and girls except for Dr. M. V. Shetty Institute of Technology. Hostel is compulsory for girls till the completion of their course. Hostel is compulsory for boys in the first year. Altogether there are six hostels maintained by the Trust accommodating about 900 students.

All the hostels have spacious rooms.All the hostel inmates are provide with breakfast, lunch and dinner and have the choice of both north and South Indian foods. The Trust takes care to serve the students with hygienic food and to keep the kitchen and the dining halls clean and tidy. The concept of the Trust regarding the hostel is to make the student feel a home away from home.

Transportation Facility

Transportation Facility Dr. M.V.Shetty Memorial Trust maintains a fleet of vehicles including several buses to transport students to their respective study centers and to their respective hostels. The transport facility is also provided to students and the staff of the colleges from different places of Mangalore and surrounding area. The buses are also provided to the students for University related works, fests and for sports and cultural competitions held in different colleges.

Sports and Games Facility

The Colleges managed by Dr. M.V.Shetty Memorial Trust has a Physical Education Department managed by the Director of Physical Education and provides Sports Facilities like shuttle badminton court, volley ball court and a kabbadi court. Indoor sports facilities for Table Tennis, Carrom and Chess are also provided. A Gymnasium and Conditioning Exercise Unit are provided in the Physical Education Department.

All these facilities are regularly used by the students and staff of the colleges to keep good health and fitness.

The students of the colleges managed by the Trust regularly participate in inter-collegiate tournaments in various sports and games events both within the University area and outside the University and won several prizes.The physical Education Department of the College regularly organizes Inter Collegiate competitions in various sports events and Inter College Tournaments in games events generally in the month of January every year. These competitions and tournaments are recognized by the affiliating Universities and involvement of students from many colleges are encouraged.

Canteen

Dr. M.V.Shetty Memorial Trust colleges Campus has a spacious Canteen facility for the benefit of staff and students of the colleges and it is run by an experienced Caterer of repute. The Canteen is having a modern kitchen equipped with facilities for hygienic food preparation.

Vegetarian and non vegetarian foods, soft drinks, ice creams and snacks are provided in the canteen at nominal cost. North Indian and South Indian dishes are also provided in the Canteen for the choice of students.

Library

The college Library is spacious and is open to the students and staff of the college, who have library membership cards. Library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during working days. Other facilities provided in the library are photocopy facility and information search facility which has been provided at the computer center. The library is equipped with about 6000 volumes of books related to the subjects tought in the different courses run in the colleges. The library also subscribes about 20 national and international journals. It also has about 500 back volumes of the journals.

Computer Centre

The Computer Center was started in the year 1994 at the College Campus by the Trust and is named as Dr. M.V.Shetty Trust Computer Center, to impart training programme on basic knowledge on computers and its applications to students, faculty and the administrative staff of the colleges run by the Trust.

The Computer Center has all the relevant software like HELINET Network System, MEDLINE and PUBMED databases, Organization website, MS-Office, Microsoft.NET, Visual Studio, Adobe Premier, Photoshop and different types of Statistical Packages. The Computer Center is being upgraded from time to time to provide the best possible computational infrastructure to the students and staff of the colleges.

Some of the services provided by the Computer center are Internet browsing, Email services, digital versions of bibliographic databases, published papers and theses, internet searches on specific subjects. The Computer center also provides software for easy storage of internal marks and generation of certificates etc. The Center also maintains facilities for LCD projections for Journal Club Meetings, workshops, seminars and conferences.

Other Facilities
ATM Facility

The ATM of the Corporation Bank is housed in the premises of the building of Dr. M.V.Shetty Trust Colleges at Vidayanagar, Kavoor, Mangalore. This facility can be availed by the student and staff of the colleges.

NSS

National Service Scheme Several units have been sanctioned to various colleges managed by Dr. M.V.Shetty Memorial Trust by the Government of Karnataka through the affiliated Universities. This scheme provided an opportunity to the students to participate in the service activities. The college has adopted one of the villages close to the campus under this scheme and students are striving for an all-round development of this village.
