Dr .M.V Shetty College of Nursing established in the year 1987 is the first nursing institute to be started under private sector in the state of Karnataka offering programmes in nursing science aiming to produce qualified nursing professionals who;

  • possess high professional qualifications and have intensive clinical training
  • show maturity along with professional updating and social accountability
  • are enabled to develop leadership skills combined with ethical practices
  • are well informed in health care informatics and management
  • can function independently and as a part of patient care in coordinated teams
  • can work well in co-operation with national and international health care units.
  • will perform effectively in areas of Nursing service, Nursing education, Nursing administration and Nursing research.

Nursing Courses:

The different courses in Nursing sciences are B.Sc. Nursing (Basic) was started during the academic year 1987-88, the B.Sc Nursing (Post Certificate) was started during the academic year 1989-90 and the M.Sc. Nursing started during the academic year 1992-93. All these courses were initially affiliated to Mangalore University and subsequently during the academic year 1996-97 all these courses are transferred to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore.
All these Courses are recognized by Karnataka Nursing Council and Indian Nursing Council and are affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore.

1. English shall be the medium of instruction for the course as well as for the example.
2. Any number of attempts is permitted, but student should clear all subject before appearing fourth year
Examination.
3.The course must be completed successfully within eight years.

Duration of the Programme:

The course of study leading to B.Sc. Nursing (Basic) or Bachelor of Nursing (Basic) degree comprises of four academic years including clinical Internship of 24 weeks.

Eligibility for Admission:

Pass in 10+2 or Pre-University examination conducted by Department of Pre-University Education, Karnataka or equivalent as recognized by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences with English as one of the subjects and physics, chemistry and biology as optional subjects provided the candidate has secured not less than45% marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. (In case of SC/ST candidates the minimum is 40%)
Candidates who have passed the vocational courses of HSE, Kerala with domestic nursing and who have taken minimum of 5 subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English in addition to vocational subjects are also eligible provided they have secured not less than 45% marks in the aggregate of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. ( In case of SC/ST candidates the minimum is 40%).

B.Sc. – Post Certificate – in Nursing

Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing is a broad based education aimed to build upon the skills and competencies acquired at the Diploma in Nursing level. The course is intended to enable the graduates to assume responsibility as professional competent nurses and midwives at basic level in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services. Make independent decisions in nursing situations, protect the rights of and facilitate individuals and groups in pursuit of health, function in the hospital, community nursing services, and conduct research studies in the areas of nursing practice. They are also expected to assume the role of teacher, supervisor and manager in clinical/public health settings.

Duration of the Programme:

The course of study shall be for two academic years from the date of commencement of term notified by the university.
Medium of Instruction
English shall be the medium for the course as well as for the examination.

Eligibility for Admission:

The candidate seeking admission must:
1. hold a diploma in General Nursing & Midwifery (GNM)
2. be a registered nurse
3. have passed pre university examination in arts/science/commerce conducted by Department of Pre University Education, Karnataka State or its equivalent recognized by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore
4. have working knowledge of English
5. be medically fit
6. have good personal and professional record.

Age requirement:

No candidate who is above 48 years of age on 31st December of the year of admission shall be eligible for the course.

M.Sc. – Nursing:

The Master of Science in Nursing programme (M.Sc. Nursing) is offered in Dr. M.V.Shetty Institute of Health Sciences and this course is built upon Bachelors curriculum in Nursing recognized by Indian Nursing Council.The programme of M.Sc. Nursing prepares nurses for leadership positions in Nursing and Health fields. They can function as specialist nurses practitioners, consultants, educators, administrators and investigators in wide variety of professional setting in meeting the national prioritise and changing needs of the society. The programme prepares nursing graduates who are professionally equipped, creative, self directed and socially motivated to effectively deal with day-to-day problems within the existing constraints and act as an agent of social change. The programme also encourages accountability and commitment to life long learning which fosters improvement of quality care.

Duration of the Programme:

The course of study for M.Sc. Nursing is extended for a period of two academic years

Eligibility for Admission:

A candidate seeking admission to the M.Sc. Nursing course should have:
1. Passed B.Sc. Nursing (Basic) or Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing or Post Certificate B.Sc. Nursing of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka (RGUHS), or any other University accepted as equivalent by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka, and must have obtained a minimum of not less than 55% aggregate marks. In respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe, the aggregate marks obtained be not less than 50% instead of 55% as above.
2. Minimum of one year of experience after obtaining B.Sc. Nursing(Basic) or minimum of one year of work experience prior or after Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing degree or Post Certificate B.Sc. Nursing, in a hospital or in Nursing educational Institution which is recognised by Indian Nursing Council.

The Proposed work experience certificate should be considered only from the date of registration Certificate issued from concerned State Nursing Council.
1. Shall have registered in any State Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife .
2. Candidate shall be medically fit.

Criteria For selection:

The selection of the candidates would be based on the merit of the Entrance examination held by University or competent authority.

Specializations and Intake:

Six students in each of the following specialty. Total: 30 per year
1. Medical Surgical Nursing
2. OBG Nursing
3. Community Nursing
4. Pediatric Nursing
5. Psychiatric Nursing – 6


Co-curricular activities and extracurricular activities by the faculty and students:
Student nurses association (SNA), unit of Dr. M.V.Shetty Institute of Health Sciences was started in 1987 under the president ship of principal Late Prof. K.J. Sabhavathi MSc. (N). Since then our SNA has been an active participant in all national and state level SNA activities. They have always won laurels in the field of sports and cultural competitions. Members of SNA unit work hard to fulfill the objectives and are on the way of progress by adding feathers to the institution. Selection of members to the SNA unit is conducted in the beginning of the academic year under the leadership of the present president Prof.Christena Saju Varkey(Principal).

Arts and Sports:

Our students always witness many achievements in the field of cultural and sports. Students also participate in RGUHS intercollegiate literary and cultural competition enthusiastically. Faculty and students are actively participating in the cultural program conducted by MMCA, Gitanjali.

Intercollegiate cultural and sports competitions of Dr. M.V.Shetty Trust Colleges are held in every academic year. It is an occasion for the students to prove their talents and they come out successfully with number of prizes.

Seminar Workshops and conferences:

Informative and interesting state and national level Seminar, workshops and conferences are organized periodically by the college.

International Day Celebrations :

The college organizes and participates in various international day celebrations like Nurses day, World Health Day, World Heart day, world Diabetic day, World AIDS Day, Breast feeding week etc. with attractive exhibitions, variety programs and competitions.

In-service education:

The faculty updates their knowledge by attending and organizing various in-service education programmes.

Celebrations of the special occasion:

Special occasions like lamp lighting, fresher’s day, college annual day, graduation ceremony, farewell functions etc are conducted regularly.
Community oriented programmes conducted by the college
Dr. M.V. Shetty Institute oh Health Science actively participate in many of the community health programmes. It includes pulse polio programme, malaria eradication programme, filarial eradication programme, immunization programme, school health programme and many more.

The institution has adopted Panjimoguru village and provide regular free health services to the people of the village. We also conduct health clinic, thrice a week in Thannirbaavi, which is free of cost.

We also conduct mass health education for the community people with an aim of upliftment of health of the people. During the posting in community areas we maintain a good interpersonal relationship and find out the health problems in the family and plan the intervention according to priority.

At the end of the community health nursing posting, based on the need of community, we give mass health education on the topics such as AIDS, Malaria, Filaria, Family planning, Environmental Sanitation, Tuberculosis, Diabetic mellitus etc.

To make the health education more attractive and interesting, we include role plays, film shows, exhibition, poster presentations etc. during the posting we also render services in the Primary Health Centers (PHCs), schools and assist in immunization and health check-ups. We also survey the community area allotted and identify the health related problems. In the community and deliver comprehensive care to families
